Political Tensions Escalate in South Korea
The People Power Party has launched a sharp critique of the Democratic Party of Korea’s recent actions, particularly focusing on the press conference held by its leader, Jung Chung-rae. The party views this event as a significant admission of failure and a dangerous shift towards undermining the country’s constitutional order.
A Critical Assessment
Park Sung-hoon, the chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, commented on the 27th, stating that Representative Jung’s press conference was not about addressing national chaos or social conflict. Instead, it was an opportunity for him to confess how the Democratic Party and the Lee Jae-myung administration have compromised South Korea’s constitutional framework over the past six months.
Park emphasized that during the press conference, Representative Jung highlighted several controversial policies as achievements. These included the abolition of the prosecution service, pressure on the judiciary, and media control legislation. According to Park, these actions are akin to admitting that the prosecution’s investigative authority has been privatized by political power, the judiciary has been subjugated under authority, and the media’s voice has been muzzled.
Accusations of Power Consolidation
Park further criticized the Democratic Party for continuing the “insurrection” narrative until the local elections. He argued that this approach reveals the party’s true intentions—relying on the “insurrection” frame to maintain power. This strategy, he claimed, is aimed at suppressing opposition and consolidating control.
Regarding the Unification Church special counsel, Park pointed out that the Democratic Party has remained silent on the suspicions that link the Unification Church to the core of the Democratic Party and the Lee Jae-myung administration’s power structure. Instead, they have labeled the People Power Party as unconstitutional and even discussed its dissolution. Park viewed this as a clear indication of their ambition to eliminate the People Power Party, which serves as a check on their power, and move toward a one-party dictatorship.
Critique of the Unification Church Act
Park also addressed the Democratic Party’s Unification Church Act on the Appointment of Special Prosecutors, etc. He noted that the act includes unrelated issues like Shincheonji while excluding the cover-up suspicions surrounding the Min Joong-ki special counsel from the investigation. This, according to Park, reaffirms that the Democratic Party has no genuine intention of uncovering the truth behind the Unification Church-Democratic Party gate through their “watering-down Act on the Appointment of Special Prosecutors, etc.”
Warnings of Consequences
Park warned that if the opposition party is seen not as a democratic partner but solely as a target for suppression, the consequences will be a deepening distrust in the Lee Jae-myung administration and a further division within the nation.
Press Conference Highlights
Representative Jung held the press conference the previous day, where he stated that the first bill of the new year must be a second comprehensive special counsel, and at the same time, a Unification Church special counsel should also be pursued. This marked his first press conference 147 days after being elected party leader on August 2.
