A Unique Camping Experience with the iKamper Skycamp DLX

For many, camping is a way to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. But it’s not always easy. Setting up a tent can be a hassle, especially when you’re tired after a long day of driving or hiking. That’s where rooftop tents come in handy. They offer a different kind of camping experience—sleeping high off the ground, away from the dirt and bugs, and with a view that’s hard to beat.

During my 18-day trip through Alaska in a long-term 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, I had the chance to test out one of the top models on the market: the iKamper Skycamp DLX. This rooftop tent is designed for comfort, with features that make it stand out from other models.

What Makes the Skycamp DLX Special?

The Skycamp DLX is the premium version of iKamper’s lineup, and it shows. It comes with several added luxuries that make the camping experience more enjoyable. One of the standout features is the built-in dimmable LED lighting, both inside and under the foldout section. This lighting helps illuminate the area around the tent, making it easier to move around at night.

Another feature is the cork-lined floor, which adds insulation and sound deadening. This makes the tent more comfortable, especially in colder weather. The DLX also includes a high-quality air mattress that’s thick and insulated, making it much more comfortable than standard options.

Setup and Teardown Process

Setting up the Skycamp DLX was relatively quick. The tent has gas struts that help lift the clamshell cover, making it easier to open. Once open, the ladder extends horizontally, allowing the floor extension to unfold. This process is smooth and efficient, though there are a few steps that could be improved.

One thing I noticed was the setup of the air mattress. While it’s advertised as self-inflating, using the included 12-volt pump required running a long cord from the car to the tent. This meant keeping the car’s ignition on, which wasn’t ideal. A cordless inflator would have made this process much easier.

Teardown was just as straightforward. The tent has straps that help keep the material taut as it closes, which prevents loose fabric from getting caught. This feature saved time and effort compared to other rooftop tents I’ve used before.

Sleeping Experience

Sleeping in the Skycamp DLX was excellent. The air mattress was very comfortable, and the extra space was a welcome relief after long days of driving. Even though I was only camping with my wife, the tent’s size allowed us to stretch out and relax without feeling cramped.

One concern I had before the trip was the midnight sun. In Alaska, the sun doesn’t set for a while, which can make it hard to sleep. Fortunately, the Skycamp DLX has blackout canvas that kept the inside dark, helping me get a good night’s rest.

Additional Features and Benefits

The built-in LED lights were a big plus, especially for reading and moving around at night. However, I found that using both the interior and exterior lights required separate power sources, which wasn’t very convenient. I mostly used the interior lights, which made morning routines much easier.

Another benefit of the Skycamp DLX is the height. Sleeping 8 feet off the ground offers a sense of security, especially in areas with wildlife. While I didn’t encounter any issues, it’s reassuring to know that animals aren’t as close to your sleeping area.

Final Thoughts

After spending 15 nights in the Skycamp DLX, I can confidently say it was a game-changer for my trip. It provided comfort, convenience, and a unique camping experience. Even though it was overkill for two people, the extra space was a nice touch.

Returning the tent felt like saying goodbye to an old friend. It was more than just a piece of equipment—it was my home away from home. If you’re looking for a premium rooftop tent that offers comfort and style, the iKamper Skycamp DLX is definitely worth considering.
