Google Unveils AI-Powered Tool ‘Disco’ to Transform Browser Tabs into Custom Web Apps

Google has taken another step in integrating artificial intelligence into the everyday browsing experience with the introduction of Disco, a new Gemini-powered tool designed to turn open browser tabs into custom web applications. This innovative feature, currently in its early testing phase, is part of Google’s broader effort to make AI more accessible and functional within the context of user activity.

Disco introduces what Google calls “GenTabs,” an AI-driven system that proactively suggests interactive web apps tailored to the tasks users are performing. For example, if you’re researching a topic for school or work, GenTabs might recommend creating a visual representation of the information to enhance understanding. In more casual scenarios, it could help generate a meal plan from online recipes or assist in planning a trip based on travel-related browsing.

GenTabs suggesting interactive web apps for user's browser activity

Unlike traditional AI chatbots, which often require users to manually input commands, GenTabs leverages the information in your browser and your Gemini chat history to build these experiences dynamically. Once an app is created, users can continue to refine it using natural language commands, making the process more intuitive and seamless.

The generated elements within the GenTabs experience will always link back to the original sources, ensuring transparency and credibility. This approach aligns with Google’s commitment to maintaining trust while pushing the boundaries of AI integration.

User interacting with GenTabs to create a custom web app

Google has not opted to develop a standalone AI browser like Perplexity’s Comet or ChatGPT Atlas. Instead, it has chosen to integrate its AI assistant, Gemini, directly into the Chrome browser. This allows users to ask questions about the current webpage they’re viewing, enhancing the browsing experience with real-time assistance.

With Disco, the focus extends beyond the immediate page to encompass the user’s overall browsing activity across multiple tabs. Whether it’s research, learning, or entertainment, GenTabs aims to provide a more cohesive and personalized experience.

Google Labs testing Disco with a small group of users

Currently, Disco is available only to a limited number of testers through Google Labs. These early adopters will provide feedback to help shape the future of the tool. Google has hinted that interesting ideas developed through Disco may eventually be incorporated into larger Google products.

The company also notes that GenTabs is just the first feature of many that will come with Disco over time. As the tool evolves, it could potentially expand into new areas of web interaction and productivity.

To access Disco, users will need to join a waitlist to download the app, starting with macOS. The feature is still in development, and details about its availability on other platforms have yet to be announced.

For now, the focus remains on refining the user experience and ensuring that Disco delivers real value to those who use it. With its blend of AI innovation and practical application, Disco represents a bold step forward in how we interact with the web.
